EU Warns Bulgaria, Romania to Step Up Anti-Corruption Fight

Ro15-565x316 BRUSSELS The European Union is warning member countries Bulgaria and Romania that they must to do more to fight corruption and clean up their justice systems. The EU's executive Commission said in reports released Wednesday that "2016 will be a test year in many respects" for Romania. It said past EU recommendations on reforms have not been respected, and that court decisions and the independence of its judiciary continue to be challenged. The report on Bulgaria said "slow progress in tackling high-level corruption and organized crime cases continues to erode public confidence in the ability of the Bulgarian authorities to deliver justice." The reports are part of a system to monitor promises that the two countries made to fight corruption and crime when they joined the EU in 2007. Source
